Little Portugal is a popular west-end neighbourhood for first-time homebuyers and those transitioning from condos to houses. Unlike neighbouring Little Italy, Little Portugal has retained much of its authentic cultural flavour even as the neighbourhood profile transitions to more young professionals and families. There are many first generation Portuguese residents still lovingly caring for their family homes and back gardens.
Little Portugal hit what may have been its peak in cool factor a number of years ago when it had an influx of hipsters and creative types who recognized that the area had exactly the right kind of grit. Much buzz was spurred by the growing ‘it’ factor of West Queen West to its south. Duwest (Dundas West) responded with an increase in cafés and watering holes that rival its neighbours along Queen and Ossington. Dundas Street West is the commercial and lifestyle hub of this neighbourhood.
As Little Portugal continues to gentrify, creative types are being replaced by young professionals and families but there’s still enough edge to make it feel more hip urban family than Leave it to Beaver.

We Feel Cooler Just Walking Down Dundas West
Dundas West feels like Queen West did ten years ago. It’s cool enough to draw crowds (Torontonians travel from other parts of the city just to hang here), well-lit and populated enough not to worry about bar-hopping at night but edgy enough that you feel like you’re in on a secret. It’s a secret that all of those people fighting for seats at soulless King West and Queen West restaurants and bars haven’t clued into yet.
Yes, we’ll admit it. Sipping our reasonably priced libations in funky but unpretentious watering holes like The Communist’s Daughter makes us feel a little bit smug.
