Description
Little Portugal homes for sale come in a variety of styles. Most houses are un-renovated although updated houses do crop up from time to time; we believe more turn-key properties will become available in the next few years as investors update and re-sell some of the beautiful Victorian gems in this popular neighbourhood.
Row, semi-detached and detached Toronto homes for sale can all be found here, many of which have character features that most buyers want including soaring ceiling and brick facades.
Little Portugal condos are few and far between if you go by the neighbourhood’s technical borders but there are a number of well-designed lofts and condos in nearby Beaconsfield Village.
Best For
Young families looking for a solid, original condition house for sale in Toronto to make their own, in a trendy neighbourhood.
Overview
Little Portugal is a popular west-end neighbourhood for first-time homebuyers and those transitioning from condos to houses. Unlike neighbouring Little Italy, Little Portugal has retained much of its authentic cultural flavour even as the neighbourhood profile transitions to more young professionals and families. There are many first generation Portuguese residents still lovingly caring for their family homes and back gardens.
Little Portugal hit what may have been its peak in cool factor a number of years ago when it had an influx of hipsters and creative types who recognized that the area had exactly the right kind of grit. Much buzz was spurred by the growing ‘it’ factor of West Queen West to its south. Duwest (Dundas West) responded with an increase in cafés and watering holes that rival its neighbours along Queen and Ossington. Dundas Street West is the commercial and lifestyle hub of this neighbourhood.
As Little Portugal continues to gentrify, creative types are being replaced by young professionals and families but there’s still enough edge to make it feel more hip urban family than Leave it to Beaver.
Why We Love Little Portugal
It’s a Renovator’s Dream
If you’re willing to go through a renovation in order to create your dream family home, Little Portugal is an excellent neighbourhood to consider. Most end-users want turn-key but the reality is that convenience in prime neighbourhoods comes at a price and it’s a price that many young Torontonians can’t afford.
Buyers typically have a choice to make–move a little further afield for a renovated home or tackle the renovation yourself in one of your top-choice neighbourhoods. If a little sweat equity or managing contractors doesn’t scare you off and you have an alternative living arrangement for the dark, dusty days of a gut-job, there are some prime original-condition properties to choose from in Little Portugal.
For six to nine months of renovation hassle, as daunting as that may seem, you can end up with a large semi-detached or even a beautiful detached house that may have taken you another decade to save for otherwise. And your investment is growing in the meantime as property prices continue to soar.
We Feel Cooler Just Walking Down Dundas West
Dundas West feels like Queen West did ten years ago. It’s cool enough to draw crowds (Torontonians travel from other parts of the city just to hang here), well-lit and populated enough not to worry about bar-hopping at night but edgy enough that you feel like you’re in on a secret. It’s a secret that all of those people fighting for seats at soulless King West and Queen West restaurants and bars haven’t clued into yet.
Yes, we’ll admit it. Sipping our reasonably priced libations in funky but unpretentious watering holes like The Communist’s Daughter makes us feel a little bit smug.
