Families looking for houses for sale in Toronto in an area with a small village feel that’s still within commuting distance to the core.

Situated along the eastern bank of the Humber River, parts of Weston Toronto don’t feel like Toronto at all; in fact, there are pockets that are reminiscent of small town Ontario. Buyers hunting for Toronto homes for sale with character and old world charm and who aren’t opposed to living on the fringes of the city-proper should take a serious look at Weston homes.

There are stretches of Weston Village where you can find storybook stone and brick houses along tree-lined streets, old-world touches like traditional lampposts and signs in its commercial district and lovely, historic churches and a landmark library. And of course, there’s all that the parkland surrounding the Humber River.

Yet despite its obvious selling features, Weston Village Toronto is still overlooked by many buyers looking for Toronto houses for sale. So much so that The Grid named Weston as one of Toronto’s most underrated neighbourhoods and a smart alternative for buyers priced out of the Junction.

This is a Community with Gumption
Weston’s roots date back all the way to the 1790’s when it was a mill, then a village as of 1881 and a town by 1915. In 1967, Weston amalgamated with the Borough of York and then with the City of Toronto in 1998. But it never lost its independent spirit and that still shows today. In fact, Weston is still a valid mailing address although it’s no longer a separate, legally recognized town and you’ll still see “Town of Weston” proudly displayed on some street signs.

Residents are fiercely proud and protective of their “town”. Locals have fought and won various battles over the years including retaining Weston’s historic street names that duplicate many from the Toronto core such as Church, King and John.

The Weston Village BIA is extremely active in the community and the Weston Community Coalition fights for citizens’ rights on issues such as the negative impact of noise, pollution etc. with the proposed new transit infrastructure. This is a community that won’t back down when it comes to preserving their history and small town neighbourhood feel.

Bicycles are cool. That is all.
Okay, that’s not quite all. We should explain. Weston was home to the Canada Cycle & Motor Company factory where a variety of sporting goods were manufactured including their star piece, the bicycle, until the company declared bankruptcy in 1983.

The historic building is now home to Tim Horton’s but there are bicycle-themed lampposts scattered around in commemoration. Bicycle production was so key to Weston’s economy over the years that the neighbourhood’s motto is “Home of the Bicycle”.

Santa is a Frequent Visitor
Weston has its own Santa Claus Parade that’s every bit as jolly and truthfully, a lot less stressful, than fighting the downtown crowds to catch a glimpse of the man himself. The Weston Santa Claus Parade runs along Weston and is a true show of residents’ involvement with volunteers and local businesses coming out to support their community.

Even though many of the residents don’t celebrate Christmas (Weston is a very diverse community), you’ll see families of different backgrounds and beliefs coming out to participate and enjoy the day with their neighbours.
