Historically a neighborhood most commonly occupied by seniors, the area is rapidly changing with the welcomed addition of young families. Although the population remains largely retired, young couples with small children are drawn to the area for the same peace, quiet and affordability that those looking to downsize were originally drawn to. In the early 1920’s the area was built up with one story bungalows and cottages with plots of land surrounding them, used to grow vegetables for barter. These vegetable plots were known as market gardens, just like those built in York-Crosstown. Although traditionally known as a sleepy part of Toronto, real estate in areas like Leaside are really taking off and continue to be in demand for their proximity to great public schools. Flemingdon and Thorncliffe Park are known for their condo buildings.

East York is home to the Toronto Estonian House. A nonprofit organization that seeks to keep Toronto’s small Estonian community thriving. An event space as well, the Toronto Estonian House is open to all Torontonians regardless of background.
