Description
The popular, east end neighbourhood of Riverside has a number of property options including new build condominiums, townhomes and houses (often smaller row-houses and semi's). But its most known for its great, low- and mid-rise lofts including one of Toronto's most coveted hard loft buildings, the Broadview Lofts. It's also home to a number of soft lofts including the Riverside Lofts, the Ninety at 90 Broadview, the Sync Lofts and the Edge Lofts.
Two of Riverside's most highly-anticipated new developments are the Riverside Square Lofts by Streetcar which will occupy the 4 acres of currently underutilized space along Queen between Broadview and the Don Valley and Streetcar’s other major east-side project, the conversion of Jilly’s at Queen and Broadview. The old den of iniquity will become a boutique hotel and restaurant similar to west-side’s Gladstone and Drake hotels.
The developer has promised ‘no condos’ on this iconic corner; the commercial building is sure to be the final feather in the cap of Riverside’s gentrification. Once completed, we’ll no longer be talking about an area in transition. Riverside is already one of Toronto’s top neighbourhoods for first- and second-time buyers and these developments are going to raise the area profile even further. We advise getting in soon as prices are likely going to rise here above average over the next five to ten years.
Riverside homes for sale also include single-family houses, typically smaller row-houses or semi-detached properties that offer good value for money. Despite the bustling nature of Queen East life, Riverside homes can be found tucked into quiet, tree-lined residential side streets and can make a great investment option for both young buyers looking to climb the property ladder over time and investors looking for rental properties.
Best For
Young professionals looking for a loft or condo for sale in Toronto in a trendy area with a great social scene or for their first house in an area that's sure to appreciate well.
Overview
Riverside is one of Toronto’s youngest neighbourhoods in terms of being recognized as a unique area by most Torontonians. Although the land has been occupied since the late 1800s, mainly for worker’s housing, it’s only recently transformed into the dynamic, youthful neighbourhood it is today known for its stellar selection of Toronto lofts and for its eclectic shopping, indie cafés and vibrant nightlife.
We love that, as forward-thinking and active as this community is, they also look back and celebrate their history, as evidenced by the neighbourhood's name. The Village of Riverside is known from documents as early as 1882 and the intent was that it would be its own, unique community from the outset. But it was annexed by the City in 1884, almost as soon as its residents began carving out their own identity, and later became known as St. Matthew's ward.
Even in modern times, Riverside struggled to retain its own identity. It’s often lumped in with Leslieville or South Riverdale for example to this day on many real estate sites. But Riverside is a distinct community unto itself, one that is increasing in popularity with first time homebuyers.
Buyers looking at townhomes, lofts, condos or houses for sale in Toronto's Riverside neighbourhood generally want something with a little edge and they'll find that here. Riverside homes for sale are a great choice for young professionals as this is a ‘hood where you can balance the maturity required of homeownership with plenty of playtime, keeping a hand in “the scene”. It’s the best of both worlds.
Riverside has gained in popularity because of its excellent position–it’s nestled between Riverdale, Leslieville and Corktown alongside the Don River and just a few kilometres from the downtown core–and the property development boom bringing to market trendy and well-priced Toronto condos, lofts and townhouses that have spurred a rapid area gentrification.
Riverside is also one of Toronto’s smallest neighbourhoods spanning only about ten blocks east of the DVP with Queen East as its commercial and lifestyle core.
Why We Love Riverside
Riverside Businesses Care
Despite the relatively recent revitalization of Riverside, the Riverside BIA is actually one of the oldest BIA’s in Toronto. They are an organized and active set of volunteers from the local business community with a great website for community news and events. They’ve led streetscape beautification projects, new pedestrian lighting installations and community walks.
You Can’t Beat the Nightlife
Don't let its small stature fool you. Riverside is big on social life.
Some of our favourite bars in the city are located here along Queen East: The Comrade, a laidback bar for sipping cocktails and catching up with friends, Prohibition Gastropub, one of the least pretentious establishments we’ve been in with “gastro” in the title, and the relative newcomer Boots & Bourbon Saloon, a fun destination for a group night out. And we can’t forget the Opera House, one of Toronto’s most popular live music halls.
It’s Toronto’s Unofficial Brunch Capital
For the morning after the night before, Riverside is one of Toronto’s most popular brunch destinations. Check out Lady Marmalade and Bonjour Brioche, two of our go-to brunch spots. Expect line-ups on weekends.
