Liberty Village homes for sale are made up largely of new condo developments and townhouses. This is a low- to mid-priced condo neighbourhood that attracts mainly young professionals, both singles and couples, buying their first or second property.
Liberty Village condos are some of the best in the city including the Liberty Market Lofts, a new soft loft development boasting 17 foot soaring ceilings. Those looking for traditional, single-family houses for sale in Toronto will be out of luck in Liberty Village but there are a number of townhomes along East Liberty, Western Battery Road and Pirandello that can make great starter family homes.
Best For
Young professionals looking for turn-key living and everything at their doorstep within a youthful community.
Overview
Liberty Village is one of the few modern, purpose-built neighbourhoods in the city and it shows in its contemporary notions of urban planning.
If the Toronto Eaton Centre is the city’s one-stop shopping destination, then this 40+ acre master-planned community is Toronto’s one-stop living landmark. Everything is clustered together, giving credence to its label as “village,” with Toronto condos for sale steps to shopping, restaurants, bars, and health and lifestyle services, all within the boundaries of this compact and well-planned neighbourhood.
When you live in a central Toronto neighbourhood, chances are everything you need is close to home. But you will not find amenities any closer than they are here, where everything is literally at your doorstep. Outdoor enthusiasts will also love the easy access to Toronto waterfront trails. Buses and the King West streetcar are within a few minutes walk from wherever you live in this neighbourhood, although the streetcar is notoriously over-packed and a continuing bone of contention among residents.
There is also a bit of an artistic vibe thanks to a seed that was planted in the early 90’s when Artscape at 60 Atlantic opened up over 40 low-cost artists' studios in their building. It's since become Toronto's media mecca with a plethora of new media and digital advertising agencies based here.
Why We Love Liberty Village
It Has a Youthful Vibe
Most residents of this neighbourhood are in their twenties and thirties and it shows in the types of shopping and dining establishments the area attracts to its commercial centre.
If you like to live somewhere where you could become besties with your neighbour and everyone enjoys a similar lifestyle, Liberty Village may be for you.
It’s a Beautiful Blend of Old and New
We love a neighbourhood where turn-of-the-century industrial architecture blends seamlessly with modern construction. Liberty Village's most comparable Toronto neighbourhood in that sense would be The Distillery District but Liberty Village has a stronger residential feel with its denser local population and many more new build residences blending with the original heritage architecture.
It's also home to a number of Toronto businesses who make use of the character-filled commercial spaces. Many of the original factory buildings have been maintained and turned into office buildings and retail spaces.
Highlights include the Castle building at 135 Liberty Street, built in 1912 by the Gillet Company, which was given its nickname because of its architectural style that's similar to Casa Loma. 99 Atlantic and 38 Hanna are great examples of the late 1800’s post and beam construction.
The Liberty Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a good resource for learning about the history and architecture of the area – there’s a self-guided, printable walking tour available on their website.
It’s a Safe Bet
For those looking for their first condo and unsure of where to buy in Toronto, Liberty Village is an all-around safe bet.
Whether it’s the area you stay in for life or not (and probably not, as residents tend move elsewhere when they start a family or when their kids grow beyond stroller-stage), it’s a great starter community for getting on the property ladder or moving up from a condo to your first, family-sized townhouse.
It has a great neighbourhood vibe, the property prices are reasonable and the dedicated central shopping area means that new residential developments are pushed out to the fringes around the railway tracks (so you won’t lose West Elm or Starbucks to another condo).
