Description
Little Italy is a hot area for Toronto real estate and the prices of renovated homes reflect this. The mix of Victorian and Edwardian architecture gives this area a classic feel and many homes have traditional layouts and soaring ceilings. It’s made up mainly of semi-detached and row-houses although there are some detached gems to be found.
For investors and contractors looking for original condition Little Italy homes for sale, this is one of the best investment areas in the city. There are still plenty of well-maintained but stylistically-outdated Toronto homes for sale in Little Italy being sold by older residents and through estate sales that can be updated for today’s market. There are also divided Victorian rentals that can be turned back into single-family homes.
Toronto condos in Little Italy include the swank new build Cube Lofts at College and Roxton, just one block west of Shaw.
Best For
Young professionals who work hard and prefer their playtime to involve a good patio.
Also, young families looking for historic houses for sale in Toronto who believe that parents should have as much fun as their kids. And you will do, if you score a place steps from the action along College or Ossington.
Overview
Little Italy is one of Toronto’s oldest neighbourhoods and a favourite of both young families and young professionals looking for homes for sale in Toronto close to downtown.
Originally settled by the Jewish community in the 1890s and later by Italian immigrants in the 1920s and 1950s, Toronto Little Italy has a lively European feel with classic character homes. Contrary to its name, there are very few Italians left in the area; most have migrated to Woodbridge and Corso Italia.
There are however strong Portuguese and Latin American communities and you can see these cultural influences in the many restaurants and cafés. There are of course plenty of Italian restaurants as well which we’re thankful for particularly on hot summer days when only authentic gelato will do.
Little Italy’s borders are often disputed but are roughly Ossington to the west and Bathurst to the east with College marking it's northern border - although most residents consider it to now extend up to Harbord through Bickford Park. To the south, Little Italy can be considered to run as far as Dundas. Depending on who you ask that is.
Everyone has a different definition of Little Italy's true perimeters which is one of the things that makes this community so charming - the fact that it's character and cultural influences bleed into surrounding neighbourhoods. One thing has remained a constant though and it's undeniable: that the heart of Little Italy is very much the bustling commercial stretch of College.
Why We Love Little Italy
Multi-Generational Mix
There’s something comforting about a centrally located neighbourhood where young families and hipsters live in harmony next to house-proud seniors who helped shape this community for over 50 years.
Move to Little Italy and you’re sure to find a nonna or avó who will tell you all about the amazing history of your street.
Food, Food and more Food
Did we mention the food? Whether it’s wood-fired oven pizza at the patios along College, Portuguese Churrasco (we recommend the back patio at Bairrada Churrasquiera Grill on College), empanadas and churros at one of the many Latin cafés, or hitting the next big thing along the Ossington strip – bring your appetite and your sense of adventure when exploring this lively neighbourhood.
Family Matters
With an abundance of schools within walking distance, proximity to parks and the west-end YMCA, and a host of family-focused retailers and restaurants along College, it’s no surprise to see more and more young families scrambling to nab Little Italy homes for sale.
